Ionis Pharmaceuticals Gets FDA Approval for Treatment for Severe Hypertriglyceridemia

By Kelly Cloonan

The Food and Drug Administration approved a treatment from Ionis Pharmaceuticals to reduce triglycerides and the risk of acute pancreatitis in adults with severe hypertriglyceridemia.

The FDA said the drug, called Tryngolza, marks the first treatment shown to reduce the risk of acute pancreatitis -- a sudden inflammation of the pancreas that can be serious or life-threatening -- in adults with severe hypertriglyceridemia.

The FDA said the medications it previously approved to lower triglycerides in severe hypertriglyceridemia patients have not had enough cases of acute pancreatitis in their trials to be able to show a reduced risk of the condition.

Severe hypertriglyceridemia is a serious condition defined by triglyceride levels of at least 500 milligrams per deciliter. When patients' triglycerides levels are that high, guidelines recommend lowering them to reduce the risk of acute pancreatitis, the FDA said. Normal triglyceride levels are less than 150 mg/dL.

Standard treatment for severe hypertriglyceridemia includes lifestyle and diet modifications, such as regular exercise, limiting alcohol consumption, and treating obesity, as well as medications.

The FDA cited two trials supporting the efficacy and safety of Tryngolza.
