BeOne Medicines Says Esophageal Cancer Treatments Had Higher Survival Rates in Phase 3 Study

By Elias Schisgall

BeOne Medicines said a new combined treatment for esophageal cancer demonstrated an improved overall survival rate in a Phase 3 study.

The oncology company said patients with HER2-positive locally advanced or metastatic gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma who took a combination of Tevimbra and Ziihera, along with chemotherapy, had an overall survival rate of nearly 40% after three years. The median overall survival was 27 months, the company said.

The result was a "sustained" improvement compared with a combination of chemotherapy and trastuzumab, BeOne said.

The company also tested Ziihera and chemotherapy without the addition of Tevimbra. Patients on that regimen had an overall survival rate of 22.9 months, BeOne said, adding that the result was a significant improvement over the control and met the study's primary endpoint.

The company said the additional four months of median survival when adding Tevimbra did not reach statistical significance in the context of an underpowered analysis.

"Following the U.S. approval in August, these longer-term data provide further evidence supporting Tevimbra plus Ziihera and chemotherapy as the new standard of care in all first-line HER2-positive advanced gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma patients, regardless of PD-L1 status," said Mark Lanasa, BeOne's chief medical officer, solid tumors.

Shares of BeOne were down 2% to $374.57 as of late Friday morning.
