Wal-Mart de Mexico 3Q Profit Falls on Higher Expenses

By Anthony Harrup

MEXICO CITY--Retailer Wal-Mart de Mexico posted a 6.1% drop in third-quarter net profit as growth in expenses outpaced an increase in revenue from the year-earlier period.

Walmex, as the unit of Arkansas-based Walmart is known, reported a profit of 11.03 billion Mexican pesos ($590.2 million) for the July-September quarter, or MXN0.642 a share, down from MXN11.75 billion, or MXN0.678 a share, a year ago.

Revenue grew 3% to MXN248.83 billion. Same-store sales rose 1.7% in Mexico with average ticket up 1.6% and store traffic little changed. In Central America, same store sales grew 4.8% as 3.4% more customers spent 1.4% more on average per visit. Ecommerce sales in Mexico increased by 16%, including a 21% rise in goods delivered at stores.

General expenses rose 5.7%, or 6.3% in constant currency terms, and were equivalent to 17.4% of sales, up from 17% in the year-earlier quarter. The increase was driven largely by investments in growth, partly offset by productivity and efficiency efforts, Walmex said.

Walmex opened 42 stores in the third quarter, 39 in Mexico and three in Central America, ending September with 3,389 stores in Mexico and 957 in Central America.

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization rose 0.4% to MXN25.37 billion, while operating profit fell 1.8% to MXN18.68 billion.
