Amphenol Ramps Acquisitions as 3Q Sales Climb

By Katherine Hamilton

Amphenol recorded a jump in revenue and profit during the third quarter, as it ramps acquisition activity with four new deals.

The maker of antennas and fiber-optic connectors posted a profit of $2.03 billion, or 79 cents a share, compared with $1.25 billion, or 49 cents a share, a year earlier.

Stripping out certain one-time items, adjusted per-share earnings were 80 cents, ahead of the 73 cents anticipated by analysts, according to FactSet.

Revenue jumped 65% to $10.23 billion. Analysts surveyed by FactSet forecast revenue of $9.49 billion.

The sales growth was driven by organic growth in most of Amphenol's end markets, including particularly high growth in the IT datacom market, Chief Executive Adam Norwitt said.

For the current fourth quarter, Amphenol expects sales to be $10.3 billion to $10.5 billion, which would be ahead of the $9.77 billion analysts are estimating. It projects adjusted earnings per share of 81 cents to 83 cents, also ahead of Wall Street's projection of 75 cents.

For the full year, the company anticipates $36.9 billion to $37.1 billion in sales with $2.82 to $2.84 in adjusted earnings per share. Analysts are forecasting $35.67 billion in sales and $2.69 a share in adjusted earnings.

Shares gained 6.3% to $83.11 in pre-market trading.

Amphenol said it closed in September its acquisition of Empire Electronics, an auto parts manufacturer based in Michigan. Empire is expected to generate $320 million in sales this year, and will fall under Amphenol's interconnect and sensor systems segment.

Amphenol has also signed deals to acquire three additional companies: circuit-board maker AdvancedPCB, fiber-optic connectivity products maker Dexgreen, and sensor company Humanetics Sensors

The purchase price for those three companies, as well as Empire, is $1.6 billion. Amphenol plans to finance the deals through a combination of cash on hand and debt.

The company said the full-year outlook accounts only for the Empire deal, and not for the three transactions which haven't yet closed. They are slated to close late this fiscal year or in the first quarter of next year, it said.

The company also approved a 20% increase in its quarterly dividend, to 15 cents a share.

This week, Amphenol's board approved a $4 billion, three-year stock-buyback plan, and expects to complete all share buybacks remaining under its previous $2 billion repurchase plan.
